First Surgery Recovery Day 19: Tiny infection

Monday, January 27, 2014

I weighed somewhere between 225-240 pounds back in 2005, same as 102-109 kilograms. I got down to around 215 in 2009, and stayed that way until three weeks ago. Three days ago I weighed in at 195.4. Yesterday my weight was 195.6. And today I'm 196, same as 89kg. I have lost a lot of weight since my surgery, which according to my surgeon is normal. This is because of my all liquid diet. I should be able to gain some of the weight back with ease in a few weeks when I get the go ahead to start eating whatever I want. I'm very tall, so 196 is pretty light for me.

Before surgery, I made plans to return to my job today January 27th. Yesterday, I decided to wait before returning so soon. I have now decided that I'm going back in this Wednesday, using today and tomorrow to heal up a bit more.

I don't know if I mentioned it or not, but as of probably a week ago, I no longer have to hold paper towels against my face if I'm going out. The drooling still happens maybe 2-3 times a day accidentally, but it's nowhere near as bad my first two weeks. Drooling may have been the most inconvenient part of recovery thus far, though the difficulty to swallow in week one is way up there on the list too.

My surgical post-op appointments are nowhere near as bad as orthodontist appointments. At orthodontist appointments, the orthodontist would often have to tighten a bracket or wire on a sore tooth, and it would feel very painful. There's little pain involved with the oral surgeon after surgery, and a lot of my post-op appointments are just getting your mouth thoroughly cleaned.

Today my surgeon found a very small infection on the left side of my mouth. He cleaned it with Peridex and prescribed me an antibiotic as a precaution, even though he said it's a very minor thing. He also let me know that I should squirt some water there a few times a day, as well as squirt some Peridex there on my own. The problem is that some food is getting stuck in the gums under the front side of my teeth on the extreme left and right ends of my mouth. My next appointment is in two weeks. There's a slightly possibility that my splint will come out, but I am guessing it'll be three weeks from now before that happens.

I'm going to try to enjoy the last day working from home tomorrow. It's been a very comfortable process the last 2-3 weeks to wake up at around 8:30-9:30am and walk 15 feet to my comfy chair to use my desktop PC. I'm able to do the work I need to do, and no one has to watch me do all of my little weird post surgery routines. Not yet, at least. I know it'll be good to get back into my normal routine. It'll help my energy and my mind and before you know it, I'll be eating a cheeseburger, I hope.

Late addition: One of my stitches fell out of my mouth while I was brushing and rinsing. It's about time for this to happen, now almost three weeks after surgery, so nothing to worry about.
