First Surgery Recovery Day 18: Pain returns

Sunday, January 26, 2014

I'm beginning to notice that each day is slightly better than the previous one. The most noticeable difference is the tiny amount of reduced swelling that I see each morning in the mirror. I'm healing well. Today I experienced some pain in the afternoon, mainly around my upper jaw. It could be that some of the numbness went away from a few spots, enabling me to feel the pain. I took an Ibuprofen and that got rid of it.

I've decided I'm done sleeping on two pillows. I slept well last night on one pillow with minimal drooling, a great accomplishment! I even slept on my side, something I hadn't been previously doing. I don't notice any increase in swelling, so that's good. Maybe I'm finished with the "keep your head elevated" part of recovery.

I have decided to wait before going back to work. I planned before surgery to return to work tomorrow January 27th, but the reality of my weakness, pain, drooling, swelling and the potential for blackouts has led me to decide to stay home probably just tomorrow and Tuesday.

Tomorrow I go in for my fourth post-op appointment. I'm excited to be approaching the three week mark, and hope I can get the splint out soon. It's the main thing that's keeping me from talking properly, other than the rubber bands. The splint is behind the teeth on my upper jaw, keeping things in place post-surgery. It's supposed to be in for 4-6 weeks, so I could potentially get it taken out as early as next week, though if I had to bet I'd say it will come out mid-February. I don't want to rush it.

I sold even more stuff on eBay. I know I've been talking a lot about eBay over the last several days, so I won't dwell too much. I'll just say that you should consider it as an activity during your own recovery if you're able.
